Mommy Camps, Week One

With all of the usual summer camps and classes canceled, I decided to help my girls have some adventures this summer of our own. For my first week of summer camp, we did three different ideas rolled into one. I figured there’s no way I can fill 8 hours with just one theme for 5 days. Instead, I created more of a collection of classes for the girls to explore some of the things they have interests in. For week 1, this included writing, movie creation, and cooking camps.

I actually tied the writing and movie camps together. The first day last week, I had the girls write a script for a puppet show. They had to keep in mind how many puppets they could easily switch between. They also needed to be sure to develop a plot. This was mainly aimed at my soon-to-be 1st grade daughter. My soon-to-be 5th grader didn’t need as much coaching on the elements of a story, which was good. I was able to help my youngest while my oldest went off on her own to work.

Then I had the girls pick out their puppets, and I had old socks available in case they wanted a character we did not have. That way, they could make anything they needed. They were sent off to practice their show 3 times to work out the kinks and character switches. After that, they performed the show for each other (and me & my camera!). Voila! Movie #1 was done!

Fun with puppets!

For day #2, we read some fairy tales from Grimm’s Fairy tales and then read some twisted fairy tales (I have a thing for crazy twists on these classic stories ever since I had a teacher have us right our own twist. My favorite one to read is “The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs” by Jon Scieszka. It’s told from the viewpoint of the misunderstood wolf!). I then tasked the girls with writing their own mixed-up fairy tale.

For the movie part of this adventure, they could either choose to act out their story, or perform it as another puppet show. Surprisingly, they mixed it up!

Day #3 featured the girls working out their very own newscast. Since they’ve been writing newspaper stories for their summer paper, I had them start their articles for that for the writing side of camp. However, I teach music lessons on Wednesday morning, so I typed out a nice guide to creating a newscast and how to split up the headlines, special feature, weather, and sports portions of the newscast. They then had to work out their parts and once my lessons were done for the morning, I recorded their newscast. I then put it all together in a quick iMovie, and added a nice news fanfare lead-in and closing. Boom. Done.

Day #4 involved the girls learning how to persuade their parents with a persuasive essay of their choice (Wormy chose to advocate for a game night, and Squid asked for a time turner from Harry Potter…oh boy). We then talked about how these same skills were used when companies make commercials – aiming for a certain audience, selling their points to change people’s minds about their product, etc. The girls then wrote, practiced, and recorded their own commercials for a product of their choice.

All of the movies I’ve made of the girls are housed on their very own unlisted playlists on YouTube that I have created. I will then be sending out a link to family to watch videos, if they are interested.

On Friday (day #5), we finally had a break in a heat wave we were having, so we took a break from the writing and movie work and played outside. The girls also had a dance recital tonight that they practiced for each day, as well, so they got extra time in practicing outside.

For the cooking part of our camp, the girls have been making food from the America’s Test Kitchen for kids subscription box that Squid’s awesome godmother bought the girls. I decided it was super awesome they can make these fun recipes, but I wanted them to also know the basic things – you know, survival food! Their cooking this week featured Mac & cheese (from a box), tacos, corn dogs, spaghetti, and grilled cheese. I am happy to report that I was able to stand in the kitchen and tell the girls exactly what to do without doing a single thing myself. They truly made dinner for us completely. And, added bonus – both girls can cook noodles, brown meat, and flip things in a frying pan. You know, those important skills….

I love kids’ knives! They both aren’t scared to chop things up because the knives aren’t scary!

So, stay tuned for next week….I think we’re going to do ukulele camp and photography camp for certain. We will see what else we need! There have been requests for the rest of our movie camp ideas to come along as well (stopped animation is on the list!)

Bumming About Missed Trips

Today I was supposed to go to New Orleans with some pretty awesome high school jazz students. I have a confession – my longest band trip in a bus was heading to St. Louis. I’ve never done an overnight bus trip with students. I was actually looking forward to being properly initiated into that club. I was looking forward to complaining about a lack of sleep, and a stiff body from the trip.

However, more than anything, I was looking forward to the adventure – we were going to a jazz festival in NEW ORLEANS! The warm air, the FOOD, the music…..I was SO excited to go back to a city I haven’t been to for a long time.

Well, what exactly do you do to get over the sad feeling that comes every time you think about it? Try to bring a little bit of NOLA to me, of course. I made my mom’s jambalaya recipe with what I had in the pantry/freezer. I streamed some New Orleans brass bands on my favorite devices. I participated in a birthday parade for a kindergartner (not quite like a New Orleans parade, but my husband talked a lieutenant in the local police department into joining us). I had a Zoom meeting/sectional with the trombone section of MYSO. I got some music, fun, and food into my day. I just wish I could have also had the nice weather from last week today! There’s always next time! Haha

The one thing that really helped over all others? Knowing that NO ONE is traveling. So many people are in the same club I am – the canceled trip club. It’s not a very fun club to be in, but it definitely makes me feel better knowing the trip was canceled to keep people safe and healthy, and that no one else is posting gorgeous vacation photos for me to be envious of! Anyone else miss out on travels?

Viva Mexico!!!!

Today’s staycation involved travels to Mexico! I had a meeting until after 11:30, and then we watched the Pope’s prayer at the Vatican, so we got a late start on Mexico.

I made cheese enchiladas with chili gravy sauce for lunch. Yum, yum! I always forget how much I love cheese enchiladas. I’m sorry to say that they were so tasty and we were all so excited that I forgot to take pictures! We also had a sparkling pina colada drink that I picked up at Aldi awhile back.

I showed the girls the travel pictures from when I went to Puerto Vallarta and Cancun with my family when I was younger. They loved seeing their aunt, uncle, and I being goofy and exploring Mayan ruins. They also really loved all of the lizards.

After that, we learned some Mexican words from this site: https://www.fluentin3months.com/common-spanish-phrases/. Our favorite part was actually the end of the page, where they talk about funny Spanish phrases. There were some very interesting phrases to learn!

Even the cat was feeling festive! Haha, just ignore the look of disgust.

Next, the girls made salsa with the America’s Test Kitchen recipe that they receive in their monthly subscription box. The box was all about experimenting with texture. We made my husband do the taste testing, and it was really neat to compare the two salsas. The recipe called for half of the salsa to be made as a chunkier, pico de gallo-type recipe, and the other half was to be processed until it was smooth. It was interesting to compare the two styles of salsa and see how different the same ingredients tasted in different textures.

I liked salsa B better, my husband liked salsa A. The girls liked anything called ‘salsa.’

The next part of our day was definitely a favorite of both Wormy and Squid. I set up a marketplace, printed off some fake money from this website: https://thisdisorganizedlife.wordpress.com/2012/10/08/reward-system-family-general-store-plus-free-printable/, and the girls got to learn the art of haggling. I had wanted to do this on Jamaica day, but found it was just as useful on Mexico day, too. I grabbed some random toys, crafts, and food that I had lying around the house, and let the girls bargain with my husband and I for the cost. It was a lot of fun, and they got pretty good at it. They each had 8 pesos to spend.

My marketplace

Next, I taught the girls the basic Salsa dance steps, and they had some fun dancing that for awhile. By this time, we needed a little down time, so we watched the movie “Coco.” We followed the movie with some yummy quesadillas for dinner, and then started an epic Uno battle. Our first game lasted 20 minutes, but the following game went on for an hour and fifteen minutes!!! These girls are crazy Uno players!

I’m not winning anytime soon!

Well, tomorrow we have to ‘return home’, as the girls have dance class to get to! Our week of virtual travels has been a lot of fun, and now we return back to the world of online learning, as their spring break is coming to an end. Wish us all luck!

Going to Jamaica!!!

Today’s staycation featured a visit to Jamaica. I had to work again today, so my husband had the lead on this one. He showed the girls the pictures from our honeymoon in Ocho Rios. The girls loved all of the pictures of food. There’s never any doubt they’re related to me! Ha!

They then got to experience a Dunns River Falls climb, through this YouTube video: https://youtu.be/SaeeaA8UmMU. It totally reminded me of our own climb up the falls.

Next, my husband showed the girls this video (https://www.visitjamaica.com/listing/luminous-lagoon/457/ and https://youtu.be/sIMWQwWeeYY) of the Luminous Lagoon, which is one of my favorite stops in Jamaica. It was so neat to be out in a boat looking at this glowing water as we went around the area. This was Wormy’s favorite of the things we showed her.

My husband also taught the girls about Bob Marley, and played his music for them. We had toured Bob Marley’s house when we were on our honeymoon, and my husband has always been a big fan. He also showed them Google Earth views of the island, and they had fun ‘exploring’ the area.

Throughout the day, we dressed up in our swimsuits (had to have proper beach attire on). We were going to set up beach chairs on the living room floor and read, but since it was so nice out, the girls went out to play instead (with clothes on over their swimsuits…it wasn’t THAT warm out). We also decided to move the indoor picnic for lunch outside as well. Thank goodness for lovely weather! We also drew some friendly messages in sidewalk chalk at the bottom of our driveway to say hi to the neighbors. Wormy’s said “Love you,” and Squid’s said “Stupid coronavirus.” We also decorated in hearts to help those on the heart scavenger hunts.

I was going to teach them the art of haggling with some printed off Jamaican money images and some little toys, but since it was nice out, we’ll save that skill for another time. We went for a nice long 2-mile family walk through the neighborhood. Then we came back and watched “Cool Runnings.” By the time the movie was done, the jerk chicken I had marinated was ready to be cooked. I served it with peas and rice, and this great bottle of Welch’s non-alcoholic sparkling strawberry daiquiris. The girls were panting from the heat of the jerk sauce, but they admitted to liking it….after they had some cheesecake to cool their mouths.

I can almost smell the jerk sauce by looking at this picture!
The spice made my girl’s eyes water!

Needless to say, both girls are very interested in going to Jamaica!

Going to Hawaii…Virtually

So Squid, Wormy, and the Husband are all on spring break this week. I am not. Since this is an awfully long stretch of time for them to be left to their own devices, I have planned some virtual vacations for them. I am going to share them all with you in case you are in need of some resources to make it through a long break.

Today, we are traveling to Hawaii. My husband and I went in 2009, so we are more than happy to share our vacation photos with the girls. When we got up this morning, we put on our Hawaiian shirts, leis, and bright colors. This helped our mood since this was the view outside:

For breakfast, we had the ever-popular SPAM and Eggs. We went to the Spam museum in Minnesota last summer, so we have a case of the variety pack of Spam. What better time to bust that out than self-quarantine?!?

yum, yum

After we finished breakfast, my husband showed the girls our vacation pictures while I did some video conferencing. After that, it was time to enter the world of Virtual Touring. I had a 30 minute “Travel to Hawaii” video that the girls watched, and a video from a helicopter tour we took on Kauai. However, even if you are not owners of this awesomeness, we quickly moved on to more general resources you can access. We visited these two virtual tours of Volcanoes National Park in Hawaii:

https://www.nationalparkstraveler.org/2013/06/take-virtual-tour-hawaii-volcanoes-national-park-video23427 – this is a very cool video of images from the tops of the volcanoes set to some music that Wormy really got excited about. I think the movie was about 3 minutes.

https://artsandculture.withgoogle.com/en-us/national-parks-service/hawaii-volcanoes/nahuku-lava-tube-tour – This was a really neat virtual tour done by a Park Ranger of some of the features of the park. You can click and drag to change your view and click other features to get supplemental materials. We were watching on it from our living room tv while screen mirroring from my ipad. The only reason I mention this is because I was using Google Chrome, and the interactive components did not work until I switched to Safari. Be sure to try it out in a few different browsers if you have trouble. Our favorite part of this was the fly over of the volcano!

After this, we explored two free apps on our Apple TV. The Trip USA app was a favorite, as there was a special on the Spam Jam festival in Hawaii. We also watched a virtual tour of Pearl Harbor. The apps both contain short little videos of different parts of the island, the US, and the world. If Hawaii isn’t your chosen virtual destination, be sure to check out somewhere else!

Squid had gotten a Sea Monsters kit for Christmas a few years ago, and we just hadn’t gotten to growing the little guys yet, so we also started that. I’m scrared…very scared! Haha

Hope this doesn’t eat me in the middle of the night!

By this time, after all of the Virtual travels, we needed to get up and bounce around. It was time to learn to Hula. We watched this YouTube video to learn some basics. We were being a little goofy, as in one of the Apple TV programs we watched, they said the Hula actually began as a way for men to prepare themselves for battle. Squid and I kept joking about getting ready to attack…

We were pretty good at the Kaholo, but I still need help with my Kawelu!!!

Next up the girls had the option of watching “Lilo and Stitch” or “Moana.” The girls chose “Lilo and Stitch,” and I went back to work.

After the movie, we worked on learning some Hawaiian words, through the help of: https://www.trafalgar.com/real-word/hawaiian-words-and-phrases/ There are a few other websites that offer audio files of the pronunciations, but some of them had a big long list of words. We only wanted a few.

Finally, we ended with dinner. My husband made Kalua Pork while I was working. It’s the recipe from the local Hawaiian store in Wauwatosa – Ono Kine Grindz. Basically you take a pork roast, cover it in Hawaiian salt and Wright’s liquid smoke, wrap it in banana leaves and let it do it’s thing in the oven. I’m sure you could just make your favorite pork recipe if you were looking for a meal idea. We served it with canned pineapple chunks to get the Hawaiian feel. Before the girls could eat, we watched performances from a Hawaiian luau through this YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4Z1pqts5N0&feature=youtu.be

During dinner we listened to music by Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwoʻole, as he is one of our favorite musicians.

It wasn’t quite the same as going to Hawaii, but I got more work done and the girls didn’t seem to get bored. 🙂
